Our Story
In 2010 UpShop Industries founder, Mario Milici, was engaged to make 40 wooden plinths for an exhibition. A week later he was asked to throw them in the rubbish - they’d served their purpose.
It was a catalyst moment, giving rise to a pilot ‘UpShop project’ for the organisation. Here, used products were collected and dismantled into components to be used again in future projects - instead of buying new. This simple behaviour shift saw waste reduce from 13 to 3 skips per year.
Mario new then the attitude and behaviour of businesses – of us all – had to change. And so UpShop Industries was born, with a mission to redirect used material waste from landfill.
UpShop started out as a used-materials recycling hub, tackling the vast amounts of usable building construction waste. We also designed and made new products from unwanted materials and discarded objects.
But soon we were approached by businesses with real problems: non-recyclable materials. Could we help?
With staff skilled in design and manufacturing, we knew we could. And we were excited to be tackling large volume non-recyclables – the pointy end of waste reduction.
So we scaled up, and over the last two years have delivered more than 7000 products and saved over three tons of non-recyclable pvc vinyl from landfill.
We’ve worked with Cross Yarra Partnerships, City of Melbourne, Monash University, Metro Tunnel Creative Program and countless smaller businesses all striving to make an environmental difference.
Our vision is to be a circular economy leader providing tangible solutions for the waste problems of industry and commerce, for the benefit of society.
